The Big Apple
Making a trip to the Big Apple to see one of America’s true treasures—the Statue of Liberty—is not for everyone. That is no longer a problem, because there is an augmented reality app that can take you there from the palm of your hand.
In conjunction with the opening of the new Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in New York, the Statue of Liberty app for iOS (no Android version yet) offers you the opportunity to experience a part of the enormous, iconic statue.
The app
When you open the free AR app, you receive interactive information about the history of the monument. It includes an audio tour and a panoramic bird's-eye view of the statue, allowing you to examine the statue in detail. You can also place a version of the statue in your own home using augmented reality. Place the statue on a table or on the floor and view it from all sides, including the interior! You can get more background information about various parts of the image by clicking on the buttons, which opens popups with additional text. You can also view the image over the years and see how its color has changed. Watch the video for an impression.

The app is a wonderful educational tool and provides a wealth of in-depth historical information about the development and role of the statue in the city over the years. A great example of how AR can be used to erase boundaries and have the whole world at your fingertips!
